Acumen establishes a first-of-its-kind climate adaptation-focused solution in Pakistan

Acumen Pakistan recently secured the support from the Green Climate Fund, a crucial step which allows the Acumen team to establish the first-of-its-kind climate adaptation solution in Pakistan.

As one of the top ten countries most vulnerable to climate change, Pakistan faces considerable climate-related risks. This vulnerability is further intensified by the country’s strong dependence on agriculture. Smallholder farmers who make up 90 per cent of the agricultural workforce lack the resources to adapt to climate risks, making them highly vulnerable and threatening the country’s food security.

Acumen Pakistan is introducing a truly paradigm shifting model for Pakistan – a country that remains on the frontlines of climate change and urgently needs to build scalable, sustainable solutions – and will support agribusinesses that are building the future of a climate resilient Pakistan. This type of catalytic initiative is crucial – especially for smallholder farmers who remain extremely vulnerable to the impact of climate catastrophes.

More about Acumen Pakistan

Acumen Pakistan, an honorary cohort member of the ICFA 2021 Cohort is seeking to address climate change to build climate resilience for smallholder farmers in Pakistan. Pakistan is the fifth most populous country in the world while also being the fifth most vulnerable to climate change. As an agrarian economy, the already underproductive agriculture ecosystem has come under increasing climate change pressure.

For Pakistan, the climate emergency is happening now. In a country where almost half the population struggles with food insecurity, investing in agriculture is the key to building robust food systems which are also at the core of achieving SDGs. Acumen will increase adaptation capacity in Pakistan’s increasingly vulnerable, yet critical agriculture sector.

Smallholder farmers will benefit from their activities, through a more efficient and productive value chain that in turn enables higher, more stable, climate resilient livelihoods. Acumen’s success will further help build an enabling ecosystem, drawing more support to climate adaptation, to continue building on a foundation of efficient energy and innovative agriculture spaces across the world.
